What is Geotechnical Engineering??

Geotechnical Engineering is a branch of Civil Engineering, which deals with the mechanics of soil and its behavior under external applied loads. It is mainly concerned with engineering behavior of earth materials. It has its application in various fields of civil engineering such as Transportation Engineering, Structural Foundations, Environmental Engineering, Irrigation & hydraulic structures, Geology, Geo environmental Engineering, Military, Mining, Petroleum Engineering and many other engineering disciplines. Geotechnical Engineering uses the principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics to investigate subsurface conditions and materials, determine the relevant physical, mechanical and chemical properties of these materials, evaluate stability of natural slopes and man-made soil deposits, monitor site conditions, earthwork and foundation constructions.
